Does anyone know what the metal molds are made of? I was trying to melt pony beads in one of the molds over a fire and to my dismay the mold melted before the beads did

The molds are made of a zinc-aluminum alloy (pot metal). I accidentally melted two of my molds :-( Now, I never heat my molds past 350 degrees.

Pot metal is not the right term to use. Pot metal is a general word that covers just about any alloy that it primarily Zinc.
If the molds were Zinc, they would be very heavy melt at about 800 deg.
I have seen Toymax molds with different charteristics, as well as the Mattel molds of the 60's. Some molds had serious corrosion problems, while others did not.
Generally speaking, the molds are Diecast from an Aluminum alloy. A380 would be a starting point.
